It Stops Here Here are some pictures from the summer event at the Taft homes sponsored by Big Dad. Now is the time to seize the moment! Big Dads Mentoring Programs, (BDMP), is an innovative program focusing on the prevention of crimes and violence in the lives of our children by using the positive influence of male role models for those young males whose fathers are not active in the lives of these young men. Compared to other racial groups and gender, young Black males are the most at- risk group of juveniles in today’s society. At the center of the dilemma is the fact that Black males are over represented in the criminal justice system while underrepresented in the educational system, a tragic reality. There are an alarming number of Black males falling victim to academic failure and being arrested and incarcerated on a daily basis. The inadequate education received along with the limited employment opportunity they possess, Black males are in crisis that needs the America’s attention. Mission StatementBig Dads Mentoring Program (BDMP), offers a standard of conduct and services to young males ages 7-17 years of age. The program provides positive role modeling, especially, for African American males, portraying a father-like –figure for boys with non-active custodial fathers. The modeling reinforces positive attitudes, goal setting, behavioral and academic improvement.
Program ObjectivesBuild self-esteem and character through counseling, training and various activities that will encourage youth’s involvement. Develop problem solving and conflict resolution skills through video training, drama, role play, and poetry writing. Develop an understanding of their heritage through classes taught by Black History. Develop alternatives to drugs, gangs and violence activities by developing other skills. Seek means and resources to better parental/ child relationships. Increase emphasis upon academics and goal setting. Guide students through periods of hardships during stuff transitions and academic struggles. Help students develop potentials by high-lighting their strengths and creating opportunities for growth and self improvement. Encourage and teach students to dream and to make their dream a reality.
