“Like Father Like Son” “Like Role Model Like Sons”
MENTORING:
THE WINNING FORMULA
Hello, my name is Rev. Earnest Rodgers, Sr.
I have discovered in the, almost twenty years of dealing with troubled youth,
that mentoring is God ordained and approved. In His Word, we’re reminded to
remember the Widows and the fatherless. We’re living a time when everyone is
too busy to care about those less fortunate than themselves, when children grow
up in broken homes, they’re affected, mentally, physically and spiritually and
only God has means of healing a broken heart that has been shadowed by broken
promises from parents.
Peoria is a growing mid-sized city with a population of
113,504. Peoria’s increasing socio-economic diversity is demonstrated by its
expanding economic base which includes a large medial community, a strong and
long-standing manufacturing base and thriving retail market.

BDMP is located in the neighborhood which has been ravaged
by poverty, gang activity, violent crimes and fear over the past two decades.
That is a disadvantage area is an assertion supported by the following
statistics.
-

-
Students 9th -12th grades have a
truancy rate of 8% in the year of 2005.
-

truancy rate of 8% in the year of 2005.
-
37% of families are headed by females with no positive
male role models.
- Median Household Income is $12,065.
Th is
project, BDMI, Big Dad Mentoring, Inc., is directed to provide services for all
youth in the area, but is focused on the African-American males; the reason
being is that the African American males particularly those from low-income
females headed households, are vastly over represented among the undereducated,
the jobless, and the jailed. Therefore, BDMI examines closely this passageway
from 7-17 because studies indicates that this passage from childhood to
adolescence occurs during these years and brings dramatic changes in physical,
cognitive, and social development. (Hamburg 1990; Task Force for Education
of young Adolescence 1989). As they experience with new identities and life
styles, boys chooses teen peer associates and make important decisions about
the type of men they aim to become, especially m ales with a non-active
custodial father.
Since
the personality development in every child is linked to the connection to a
caring adult, Big Dad Mentoring Programs works hard to fill the void by
providing adult mentors for our urban youth. Once in a mentoring relationship,
The program is committed to developing every youth in our areas. Mentoring, not
only builds up young lives, it also impacts the surrounding communities as well.
It is the program objectives to set long term goals with each youth. Mentors who
take on this challenging opportunity to help repair broken individual lives will
also repair the walls and fabric of our great nation, Mentoring works!
